WANDERING IN THE GREEN WONDERLAND

Nature wise, it is a quiet time in the middle of summer months here in Estonia.
Spring’s freshness is over and the first starry nights of August are far away.
Warm temperatures have taken over and everything is still. Usually for me, it is the most boring time of the year when it comes to nature photography.

Nevertheless, there are still breathtaking places that you can find and that can amaze. In that world, nothing is boring and still.

In Lahemaa National Park, there is a small village called Altja. Close to the village, there is a hiking area that looks like a wonderland full of greenery. Ferns in their full glory in the middle of forest. A small river gently flowing between them. Birds are singing and beautiful blue Demoiselles are flying above the river. If you pay attention, you could even hear and see the Kingfisher flying by. When you first arrive at this place, you start to doubt it’s even real ― the views seem like something out of a fantasy movie. As I hadn’t been able to visit this place for a couple of years, it sounded like a perfect plan to freshen up my memory about the magic and beauty that lies there.

The Sigma 20–200mm F3.5–6.3 DG | Contemporary lens helped me to capture everything in this beautiful environment. From wide-angle landscape scenes together with the river and ferns to the tightly framed scenes, thanks to its versatile focal lengths. Because the lens has very good close-up shooting capabilities, I enjoyed getting really close to different small subjects to capture details and witness the so-called hidden nature that we usually don’t see. At the same time, I was able to capture the Demoiselles that were flying above the river with a 200mm focal length. The thought of changing lenses for different scenarios didn’t even cross my mind. So the shooting process was very pleasing and free of any unnecessary thoughts. Simple wandering through the magical place. Whatever I saw, I could capture.

I think the lens is very versatile for different scenarios and would also make an excellent travel companion because of the small size and light weight.

About

Nature and Outdoor photographer based in Viljandi, Estonia. Herve mainly photographs landscapes and nightscapes. He also has a strong passion for hiking and camping outdoors where he can turn his photography visions to life. From capturing the northern lights in freezing conditions to foggy early mornings that touch his body and soul. In the last couple of years, his photography journey has taken him abroad and travelling has become an important and inspirational part of his life. He thinks that beauty can be found everywhere. You just need to stop and have a look, and through his work, he hopes other people also feel inspired to take time and witness the beauty of nature that surrounds us every day.
